I have felt the convenience of using PC with two drives in the late 2000s, when in addition to the main HDD on 120 GB I bought the second second second used IDE HDD on 80 GB. Since then I had many different drives in my PC, but one thing did not change. There were two or more. Even with all the SSD’s going around, I still stand by my principle.
I often upgrade computers and laptops for friends and acquaintances, getting their old components for the work. And the time came when many of them were not enough of the old SSD to 120 GB, which gradually moved to me. In 2019, for a while I had as many as three small SATA SSDs in my PC.
But this spring I bought a roomy 1TB Samsung 860 EVO and “scattered” the old SSDs over the PCs and laptops of the household.
But the fastest ones are. Samsung 850 EVO 120 GB I left in the main PC and now I will tell you about the pros and cons of this solution. But note that both my SSDs are with SATA III interface and almost identical in speed specs.
Hard drive specifications
Firstly I will tell you about the characteristics of hard drives and which of them are important, which are not, and which are not worth paying attention to at all.
Capacity. One of the key characteristics determining how much data can be placed on the drive. Up-to-date hard drives are represented mainly by the models from 0.5 to 18 terabytes, and with today’s data volumes, buying an HDD of 2 terabytes or less is not very rational. In addition, the most profitable by the conditional “cost per gig” are devices from 3 to 8 TB. If you don’t store a ton of media content on your PC, your choice is a 3-4 terabyte HDD. Price. Here everything is clear, but I’ve already told you about the most profitable solutions to buy. But the situation may change, for example due to discounts and promotions.
Speed. I’m not talking about spindle speed, but sequential read and write speed. Before the advent of fast and affordable SSDs, this was also a major consideration, but nowadays you can pay very little attention to the spindle speed, which is the same as the spindle speed, by the way. There are no especially slow HDD on the market (except SMR), and if you need speed. buy SSD; SATA-versions are much faster, and M.2 PCI Express dozens of times faster, and we’re talking about sequential operations, if we’re talking about random, the difference is even more impressive.
Cache capacity. Another feature which has practically lost its importance with the OS, programs and games migrating to SSDs.
Intease. We are only interested in SATA III for PC since SAS is a server slot.
Form Factor. 3.5-inch hard drives. for computers, 2.5-inch. for laptops. You can install a 2.The 5-inch model and into a desktop, but there is no sense in it: the only advantage of this form factor is the miniaturization. Otherwise, larger HDDs are better. they are bigger and faster. Simply put, if there is a free 3.5 or 5.25 slot. for PCs we always take 3.5″ hard drive, but you need a sled in this case too.
Filling. Can be air or helium. The trick of helium is that its density is much lower than air density, which means that you can fit more “pancakes” into the hard drive’s case, also the power consumption and vibration level are reduced. Nevertheless, helium has a significant disadvantage. it is able to seep even through solid metal, albeit very slowly. For a couple of years it is not a problem, and helium HDDs are on average even more reliable than classical ones, but what will be in the long run is unclear, so in my opinion it is better not to buy helium hard drives for home PCs, especially as there are enough good options among 6-8 terabyte models, and hard drives with more modest capacities do not need helium at all. However, if you refer yourself to the innovators and like to take the risk. you can take a helium HDD, but back up important data from it, as well as from any other.
Type of Recording. There are classic and Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR), with partial overlapping of tracks. This is a critical parameter and my recommendation is simple: do not buy SMR-drives for any scenario except for those where you write something to them once and will not rewrite them again. In home PC this scenario is rare. more likely for archives and data centers.
Let me answer why I am so categorically against hard disks with tiled recording type. When overwriting any data, when the CMR-buffer is exhausted, such hard drives have to overwrite many more tracks than ordinary drives. not only the target track, but also neighboring tracks. So, write speed decreases many times and with large amount of data and its fragmentation becomes unacceptably slow, and disk may freeze or crash out of system, after that only turning PC off and on again will help.
Important: Don’t buy tiled (SMR) hard drives for gaming, home or office PCs. their performance when rewriting large amounts of data is extremely low and operation stability leaves much to be desired. We can also mention microwave or laser heated recording, but solutions with these technologies are just starting to hit the market and it is too early to consider them for home PCs.
Purpose and mode of operation. For some hard drives the manufacturer has specified the intended operation mode as “8 hours a day”, but for others it is 24/7. We are of course only interested in the second case, so I would not recommend buying Seagate Barracuda and WD Blue. Personally I rarely have a computer that shuts down, and I would imagine that most people do too. As for the purpose. some HDDs are positioned as desktop, others as dedicated for video surveillance systems, some. for NAS, others. for servers, and so on. You should not pay too much attention to it, but it is necessary to look at the accompanying characteristics: for example some server disks are fast but very noisy, and some NAS Western Digital Red disks use the tiled recording type.
Noise level. It is better if it is up to 30 decibels, at most up to 35, though it all depends a lot on your case and subjective perception. Read reviews and reviews. sometimes the manufacturer claims the model to be quiet, but in fact it makes unpleasant and quite loud noises. e.g. crunching or clicking.
Manufacturer. The choice of manufacturer is largely a matter of personal preference.
