The video card driver is responsible for changing the brightness of the screen. If there is a problem with it. for example, an outdated version is being used. then the brightness will not change. Fascinating blog of a keen IT man

Those users, who used to work exclusively on desktop PC, may be somewhat surprised, starting to work on a laptop. One of the main features of notebook screens is that you can not adjust the brightness on it the same way as on a regular monitor. there is no separate button or wheel for this.

And the default brightness of the screen is usually such that it can cause considerable discomfort to the user’s eyes. it is at a relatively low level, usually to save energy, because the screen is one of the main consumers of energy.

Today I’m going to tell you how to reduce or increase the brightness on your device. I will show the example with Windows 7 although there is no difference between other operating systems including the still popular XP. In addition, this tutorial is suitable for most modern laptops made by companies such as Lenovo, Acer, Sasmung, Asus, Dell, Sony, etc.д.

Increase the brightness of the screen on your notebook using the

On most laptops you can change the brightness of the screen with special keys on the keyboard. As a rule, they are marked in the form of a sunshine. These keys are located either on the top of the keyboard, on the F1-F12 bar, or on the left and right arrow keys.

The volume keys are functional. This means you also need to press the Fn-key.

For example, to make your Dell XPS notebook (picture below) brighter, hold down the Fn F12 key. To increase the brightness of your Asus notebook screen, you press the Fn F6 key.

What to do if the brightness is not adjustable

1) Update the drivers on your video adapter // roll back not the old ones

In most cases it is not possible to change the brightness because the system does not have the current video card driver.

This can happen, for example, if after installing or upgrading the system you did not download them from the official site (as a result you are left with a driver that was installed by Windows itself. It certainly works, but some options are not available!).

Here you can do the following:

  • Go to the official website of your device, download the driver for your video card and update it. About how to do all this procedure. see “How to change the brightness“. this article;
  • Try to roll back the old driver (which may still be in the system, for example, after updating it). I recommend to try this variant first and if there are no other versions in the system. then the first one. the link just above

How to try to roll back the system to an “old” working driver:

  • go to Device Manager (to open it, press WinR. enter the devmgmt command.msc and press Enter);
  • then expand the “Video Adapters” tab. select your video card and right-click on it, then select “Update Driver” from the menu;

In most cases after driver update you can change the brightness without problem with the help of Windows Control Panel (for example Power settings) or driver’s Control Center itself even in those cases when other ways don’t work!

2) Check if the function keys work

Another thing to check is if the function keys on your keyboard work. It is possible that your drivers are ok, but for example these keys are disabled in your BIOS.

You can learn how to configure and enable them from another one of my blog articles (link to it below).

Help!

What to do if the function keys do not work (F1-F12 as well as Fn), you can not change the brightness, volume, enable/disable the touchpad or Wi-Fi adapter.

3) Disable Adaptive Dimming

Some laptops have special light sensors installed and by default adjust the brightness of the screen according to the lighting level in the room (called: Adaptive Brightness Control).

In most cases this option does not provide an optimal level of picture quality on the screen, and it is recommended to turn it off.

To do this, open the Windows Control Panel and go to the following section: Hardware and Sound\Power settings\Change circuit settings

You need to open the advanced settings of your power scheme.

Change Advanced. power settings (Windows 10)

In the “Screen/enable adaptive brightness adjustment” tab. will be the cherished setting. Simply turn the modes to “Off.”. In some cases you will need to reboot the laptop.

Turn off the adaptive brightness adjustment of the screen

By the way, note that some models of laptops are equipped with additional configuration centers (such as Sony VAIO, Lenovo, etc.).).

They may have some options that affect the quality of the picture on the screen (example below). Just go to this kind of control center and disable all options which are related to brightness and adaptivity sensors.

4) Try to change OS (or install a second one for testing)

The last thing I recommend, if this problem occurs, is to try reinstalling Windows OS (and drivers with it), or to create another subsection on your hard drive, and install another OS version on it.

I should note right away that it is highly desirable to go to the official website of the manufacturer of your laptop before this, and see what operating systems there are drivers for.

As a help!

I recommend to read article about how to choose correct Windows operating system for laptop or PC.

Check on the laptop manufacturer’s official website to see which Windows operating systems the drivers for are available
