How to connect your computer to the monitor

When you can not, but really want to: two different monitors from one DVI port

Everyone used to sit at a computer with one main monitor, then came laptops with a low-quality matrix, since then they started to connect a second monitor. Personal computers appear in the apartments less and less often, giving preference to laptops.

And it’s true, the laptop does not take up space, you can take it with you on the couch, there is enough power for most tasks, and it consumes much less electricity. And if you want to use your notebook as a desktop, you only need to connect an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor, t.ч. Two screens are now the norm rather than something strange.

Making folders public

Now that the computers are connected, it is a matter of small. Need to specify what specific folders should be available for public use.

Make sure that sharing is enabled on your system. Click “Start” → “Settings” → “Network and Internet” → “Sharing Options”.

Check under “Private” that the items “Enable network discovery”, “Enable automatic configuration on network devices” and “Enable file and printer sharing” are active.

Click “All Networks” and activate the “Enable sharing so network users can read and write files to shared folders” option.

Please note that in order to access shared files and folders, by default you will need an account on the computer where they are stored. When you try to connect, the system will ask for a username and password. If you don’t want to bother with this, select the “Disable sharing with password protection” option. Your files will still be safe: only devices on your local network can access them.

Now right click on the folder you want to share. Select “Share with” → “Individual”.

In the window that appears, click on the arrow next to the empty field and select “All”. Click “Add”.

In the “Permission Level” column, select “Read” to allow only viewing the contents of the folder from another computer, or “Read and Write” to allow it to be modified as well.

Finally, you need to know the name under which your computer is listed on the network. Click on “Start” → “Settings” → “System” → “About”. You will see “Device Name”. To make it easy for you to find the desired computer in the list of devices on the local network, the name can be changed. Click on “Rename PC”.

Open “System Preferences” → “Sharing. Check the “File Sharing” box on the side.

Click on the plus sign below the “Shared folders” section. Select the one you want to share.

There is another field on the right. This specifies whether or not it is possible to modify the contents of your folder from another computer. Click on the dropdown menu next to “All users” and select the desired level of access: “Read & Write, Read Only, or Write Only.

Click on “Preferences” and check the “Share files and folders via SMB” box. Then check your macOS account in the box below.

If you want to connect to shared folders on your Mac without a password, go to “System Preferences” → “Users and Groups”. Click on the lock and enter your user password, if desired. Then select the “Guest” account and activate the “Allow guests to connect to public folders” option.

You can find out your Mac’s name on the local network by looking at the top of the window in the “Sharing” settings. To change it, click “Change” and enter another name, then click OK.

Select the desired folder and right click on it. Click on “Local Area Network Public Folder.

Turn on the “Publish this folder” checkbox. For the first time, the system will prompt you to download the necessary applications to work with the local network. Click “Install service”, then confirm “Install” and enter your user password. Wait a couple of minutes for the service to install.

Now press “Allow other users to modify folder contents” and “Guest access” (to avoid entering any passwords unnecessarily). Click “Apply” and “Set permissions automatically”. That’s it, the folder is now open for public use.

Click “Show apps” → “Settings” → “Sharing” and make sure that the switch in the window title is activated.

Here you can also learn and change the name, under which the computer appears in the local network.

The process of connecting the monitor to the computer

So, if you don’t know how to connect the monitor to the computer, first of all examine the back panel of your computer. Most likely, you will find video outputs (DVI or VGA output, as well as HDMI) at the bottom of the back of the system unit.

If you found the video outputs on the bottom of the system unit, these are the video outputs of the video card, and they should be used first. If there are no video outputs at the bottom of the system unit, it means that the computer is not equipped with a separate video card and uses the built-in graphics. In that case you must use the video outputs on top of the system unit (these are the video outputs on the motherboard).

The back of your computer

Then look at the back of the monitor. These days it’s hard to find a monitor without DVI input. But some of the cheapest or older models may not have it. If your computer has DVI output but your monitor doesn’t have DVI input, then you have to use the VGA output on your computer and the VGA input on your monitor to connect your monitor. If your computer only has DVI output and your monitor only has VGA input you can use an adapter.

But, in most cases, such problems do not occur. As a rule there are both DVI and VGA input on the monitor, and the choice of video interface to connect the monitor depends only on what video outputs your computer has.

To connect your monitor to a computer with a DVI or VGA interface, you must connect the video output on your computer and the video input on your monitor with a DVI or VGA cable (depending on which interface you use). Once connected you need to tighten the two screws that are on the sides of the DVI and VGA cable.

These screws have plastic tips and can be tightened by hand. If you don’t secure the connection with the screws, the cable can have poor contact, resulting in flicker on the monitor.

If you are using an HDMI cable, you do not need to install the screws because the cable does not have this feature. In this case, you just need to plug the HDMI cable into the HDMI output on your computer and the HDMI input on your monitor.

Step-by-step instructions for connecting your TV to your PC or laptop

Let’s start directly with the connection between the TV and the computer. To start with, it is desirable to find out which way of connection will be optimal, least expensive and will provide the best image quality.

The connectors such as Display Port or USB-C/Thunderbolt are not listed below, because these inputs are not currently available on most TVs (but I do not exclude that they will appear in the future).

Determine what ports you have for video and audio output on your computer or laptop

  • HDMI. If you have a relatively new computer it is very likely that you will find an HDMI port, which is a digital output that can carry both high definition video and audio at the same time. In my opinion, this is the best option if you want to connect your TV to your computer, but it may not be applicable if you have an old TV.
  • VGA. very common (although the latest video cards do not have it) and easy to connect. This is an analog interface for video, but it does not carry audio.
  • DVI is a digital video interface found on almost every modern video card. An analogue signal can be transmitted through DVI-I output, so DVI-I to VGA adapters usually work without problems (and this can be useful when you connect a TV set).
  • S-Video and composite output (AV). can be found on older video cards, as well as on professional video editing cards. Provide not the best picture quality on your TV from your computer, but may be the only way to connect your old TV to your computer.

These are all basic types of connectors used to connect a TV to a laptop or PC. In all likelihood, you’ll have to deal with one of the above, since these are commonly found on TVs.

Determine the types of video inputs present on your TV

Check what inputs your TV supports. you will find HDMI and VGA inputs on most modern televisions, and S-video or composite (RCA) inputs on older televisions.

Choose which connection you will use

Now I will list in order the possible types of TV connection to the computer, with the first. the best in terms of picture quality (in addition, using these options, to connect the easiest), and then. a couple of options for last resort.

You may have to buy the appropriate cable in the store. As a rule, their price is not too great, and you can find a variety of cables in specialized stores of radio equipment, or in various retail chains that sell consumer electronics. I should note that various HDMI cables “with gold plating” for the wild sums will not affect the quality of the image at all.

  • HDMI.HDMI. The best option, it is enough to buy a cable HDMI and connect the appropriate connectors, not only the image is transmitted, but also the sound. Possible problem: No sound via HDMI from laptop or computer.
  • VGA TO VGA. Also an easy to implement way to connect your TV, you will need the appropriate cable. Many monitors come with such cables and you might find one you aren’t using. You can also buy one in the store.
  • DVI TO VGA. Same as above. You may need either a DVI to VGA adapter and a VGA cable, or just a DVI to VGA cable.
  • S-Video to S-Video,S-Video to Composite (through the adapter or an appropriate cable), or Composite to Composite. Not the best way to connect due to the fact that the image on the TV screen will not be clear. As a rule, in the presence of modern technology is not used. Connection is similar to home DVD, VHS and other players.

Connect your computer to your TV

I want to warn you that this action is better to perform, completely turn off the TV and computer (including unplugging from the socket), otherwise, although not very likely, but possible damage to equipment due to electrical discharges. Connect the right connectors on the computer and the TV, then turn on both. On the TV, select the appropriate video input signal. HDMI, VGA, PC, AV. Refer to the TV manual if necessary.

Note: if you connect TV to PC with discrete graphics card, you may notice that the back of your computer has two locations for video output. on the video card and on the motherboard. I recommend that you connect your TV in the same location as your monitor.

If everything was done correctly, most likely the TV screen will start to show the same thing as the computer monitor (it may not start, but it can be solved, ). If no monitor is connected, only the TV will be displayed.

Despite the fact that the TV is already connected, you are likely to be faced with the fact that the image on one of the screens (if there are two. monitor and TV) will be distorted. You may also want the TV and monitor to show different images (the default setting is mirror image. the same on both screens). Let’s move on to setting up the TV-PC bundle first on Windows 10, and then on Windows 7 and 8.1.

Setting the picture on the console

First go to the “Screen and Sound” panel, then select “Configure video output”. You will be prompted to adjust the RGB color range, define the resolution and output the Deep Color. Select the desired resolution is determined by the type of connection and the capabilities of the console. The RGB setting should be full. Then go to Deep Colour and set it to “automatic”.

Sometimes if you follow the instructions clearly, you can not connect your PlayStation 4 to the monitor. There are probably reasons for this:

  • The HDMI port is only aimed at the output. In many models of laptops, this connector does not receive the transmission, and the projection on the gadget does not arrive;
  • The picture streaming through the Remote Play becomes jittery or slow. the equipment has no time to process the information. Then it is recommended to use a more powerful module;
  • No sound. the cable does not reproduce it. It is necessary to use other methods of outputting audio from the set-top box (headphones, speakers).

Important: On mobile computers with low power sometimes freezes. This is caused by the fact that a weak video card or processor is unable to stably broadcast the picture from the console. With such problems, it is desirable not to load the equipment unnecessarily to prevent its wear and tear.

Having understood the instructions, users can perform a connection between the two devices easily, without any additional steps or complex manipulations. All you need is a suitable cable and adapters.

How to connect a second monitor to a laptop computer.

Modern laptops can replace full-fledged computers, but they have one drawback. a small screen. To work comfortably, connect a larger monitor to the device.

There are different options for connecting an additional monitor. First determine what ports for output the manufacturers have equipped the laptop and the second monitor.

Almost all laptops have a VGA port. This is a reliable, although outdated, analog interface. Connection is no problem. The second most popular is the HDMI port, a digital high-frequency port.

Another way to connect a second monitor is via DVI output. It’s already standard on PCs, but is rarely found on notebooks. The image is of better quality than the VGA port, but it does not support high resolution screens. The most common is the DispayPort.

Check the capacity of your product. You need a relatively small amount of power for the option to duplicate images on both screens. If different images will be displayed on different screens, the notebook must be able to cope with several programs running simultaneously.

Switch the notebook off. Connect the two identical ports with a suitable cable and restart your notebook. The device should detect the second monitor. If your connected devices do not have the same ports, buy adapters allowing you to connect one interface to the other. After switching on, the image on the sub-monitor must automatically appear, it sometimes turns on with a delay.

If there is no image on the secondary screen, right-click on the laptop desktop, then alternately click on “Properties”, “Options”, select an additional monitor and set the resolution for the primary and secondary. To duplicate it, press the corresponding mark in the menu that opens. Check the “Extend the desktop to this monitor” box to make the second screen show a different image.

You can switch to the second screen with the function keys F1, F2F3. One of the keys is responsible for switching monitors. It can turn it on by itself or in combination with others, such as the Prin button. It is practical to use a TV as an additional monitor. In this case it is pleasant to watch movies on TV screen in good quality, saved on a portable device.

How to connect a second monitor to your laptop or PC?

A second monitor is albeit not a necessary, but still an extremely useful addition to a computer or laptop. It can considerably increase your productivity, saving you from the necessity to switch between the windows of your applications over and over again. It is also useful as a second and even third monitor in the games, expanding the viewing angle in the virtual battles. In this article we will tell you how to connect several monitors to a PC or laptop, and how to make a wireless monitor from a smartphone or tablet.

Duplication, expansion or multi-monitor

Modern computer operating systems Windows, macOC and Linux (we will give tips on setting up the first example) support simultaneous connection of several monitors in two modes: a duplicate image and expanding the desktop. The first option is useful if you want to show the same picture on several screens simultaneously, for example, in a store or a cafe. Duplication is also often used when connecting a laptop to a home TV for streaming movies or games (see. See “How to Connect a Laptop to a TV”?”).

The second option. extension. is applied when one person is using several monitors sitting directly at the computer table. This allows you to display the windows of different applications on each of the monitors.

When a second monitor is connected to a computer or laptop (in the second case, you may need to press the appropriate key or combination of keys), the picture is duplicated by default. But in case of monitors with different resolution (1080p, 900p, 768p) it is not convenient, because on the second monitor the picture will be blurred. To switch to the expand mode, right-click on the Windows desktop, select the menu item “Screen Options”, and then “Expand”. Now each of the monitors will be set to its native resolution.

In addition, there is a third mode. the creation of a single software multimonitor, which is used for full-screen games with three-dimensional graphics. Implemented not through the operating system, and proprietary technologies from graphics card manufacturers. NVIDIA Surround and AMD Eyefinity. The settings are made in the programs GeForce Experience and AMD Crimson (old name Catalyst), respectively. Intel integrated graphics do not support multi-monitor gaming, only the usual duplication and expansion.

How many monitors maximum?

Modern discrete graphics cards for PC support the simultaneous connection of motherboards with three monitors, and top models support six monitors simultaneously (see “Connecting discrete monitors”). How to choose a graphics card for your computer?”). Integrated graphics can output no more than two simultaneous video signals, even if the motherboard has three video ports (see video ports). See the article “How to choose a motherboard for your computer?”). Some modern motherboards allow discrete and built-in video card to work simultaneously (activated in the BIOS menu). This makes it possible to connect a total of five to eight monitors.

Laptops, despite having two video outputs (HDMI and VGA), support only one external monitor. But you can still connect the second monitor with a USB-video card, which produces for example the company Inno3D.

Monitor from a smartphone or tablet

The second monitor is not cheap, and often you do not need it all the time, but only occasionally. So a good economical solution is to turn your smartphone or tablet, which almost everyone has, into a small display for your PC.

This can be done with the application Splashtop Wired XDisplay, versions of which exist for Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. The free demo version of the application has a limit on the duration of one session (only 5 minutes), after which you have to reconnect. Therefore it is recommended to spend 5 for the full version.

Splashtop Wired XDisplay must be installed both on the smartphone or tablet (client part) and on the computer or laptop (server part). The client and server devices are connected by a USB cable. It is better to set the screen resolution to a smaller size, such as 1280×720 or even 800×600, otherwise the fonts will be unreadably small. For greater convenience we recommend to buy or make a stand for a smartphone or tablet so that the second monitor is parallel to the first.
