All we need is the network cable itself, which we will use to connect the computer to the router. This is a normal twisted pair, with RJ-45 connectors on both sides. Such a cable should be included with your router. It is true, it is short (depends on the manufacturer of the router). If you need a long cable, you can have one made at a computer store. You can do it yourself, but it needs a special tool. There are plenty of instructions on the internet.
Generally, you can connect 4 devices to your router with a network cable. It is 4 LAN ports you are likely to find on your router. In some cases, the LAN connector can be 1, or 8. It does not matter what version of Windows you have on your computer. The instructions are suitable for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. In Windows XP you connect in exactly the same way but the IP settings will be slightly different.
Connecting to a router with a network cable (LAN)

Plug one end of the cable into the yellow connector (LAN) of our router.

Setting up static and dynamic connections
There are two options for network card settings: dynamic or static.
Static connection. with this connection your ISP will give you fixed settings. That is, your IP address will never change, it is usually prescribed in the contract. In the World Wide Web, the IP (external) will also be the same all the time.
Dynamic connection. this is the opposite of a static connection. With this method the IP address will be constantly changing after each reconnection to the provider. For example: switch off the router and then switch it on, the IP address will change.
How to configure a static connection
To create this connection, you need to make certain steps.
- Click on the Network icon and select “Control Center. Then, in the window that appears, click on the “Change adapter parameters” on the left-hand side.
- This will open a window with available adapters on this computer. Right-click on the icon “Ethernet”, “Properties”.
- Click once on the section “IP version 4”, after highlighting this item click “Properties”.
- In the window that appears, put a dot “Use the following IP address”, “Use the following DNS address.
- Next, take these settings from the provider and enter in the sections. Click on “OK”

How to create a dynamic connection
- To create this type of connection we also need to log in to the network card. To do this, follow the same steps as for creating a static connection. See points 1, 2, 3.
- Once you are in the “IP properties version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” section, select the checkboxes “Get IP address automatically”, “Get DNS server address automatically”. Click “OK” to finish installation.
Setting up the OS
To connect the laptop to the computer correctly, it is necessary to do, that these devices have different names, different ip-addresses and one workgroup.

Right-click on the network status icon (near the clock) and select “Network and Sharing Center”.

Connecting the cable to the laptop
It remains only to connect the second side of the same cable to the laptop, finding the appropriate port on the sidebar. It is not difficult to find it, because it has a different form. When connected, you will also hear a click. If the plug is protected by a blindfold, remove it carefully before making the connection.
A successful connection will be notified by an appropriate LED in the taskbar of the operating system. If the router has already been configured, access to the network will appear immediately, otherwise an Unidentified network or Connected, no access to the network notice will pop up.
