How to know how many video cards are on your laptop

Find out how much memory your video card has and what type of memory it has

The memory capacity of the video card and its type is one of the most important characteristics of a computer. It is the amount of set (own) memory of the video card of a stationary PC or laptop, is a key parameter when running computer games and demanding programs, especially in high resolutions. There are a lot of ways to find out how much memory your video card is worth. I will show and tell only the most simple and informative.

There are 2 players in the discrete (external) graphics card market right now. It’s NVIDIA and AMD (makes video cards under the Radeon brand). In both manufacturers, when you install video card drivers. There you can find the basic information about the video adapter.

NVIDIA Control Panel

It can be accessed by clicking on the nvidia icon on the bottom right side of the Windows Control Panel, or by right-clicking anywhere on the desktop and selecting “NVIDIA Control Panel.

Then go to “System Information” and find the parameter “Allocated video memory”. That will be our megabytes or gigabytes installed on your video card and their type.

AMD Radeon Control Panel

The steps here are exactly the same as with the NVIDIA Control Panel.

Capacity and type of video card memory in the Radeon control panel

Through the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

Press search line and type dxdiag and press execute on the appearing application. You can also open the command line by pressing WinR. Works for all versions of Windows.

Go to the “Screen” tab and find the “Display memory (video memory)” option. This tells you how much memory is on the video card.

My memory capacity does not appear correctly. It should be 2048, not 2007. I haven’t figured out the reason yet. If anyone has or had such glitches, write why it happens.

What video memory capacity affects

I recently purchased Asus STRIX RX580 8GB video card. It’s good value for money. And its power is more than enough for a comfortable game in FullHD. Even now in well optimized games 4 GB is not enough.

For example, GeForce GTX 1060 video card comes in two versions 3 or 6 GB. This is when it is recommended to get the 6GB version. In games 3 GB is already not enough. The processor has to store data in the slower RAM.

How do I see the video card information in Windows 7??

To do this, run the built-in Windows utility dxdiag, go to the “Screen” tab, and look for “total memory” on it. This value is the total amount of memory which can be used by the video card, i.e. the sum of the amount of built-in memory and memory allocated from the computer’s main memory.

How do I know what series of graphics cards I have??

To open it press the key combination Windows-R and type the command “mmc devmgmt. Open “msc” or “Start” menu and search for “Task Manager. After starting the “Task Manager”, you should open the “Video adapters” section, and if the drivers are installed, you will see the name of your video card.

  • The first thing you do is to run “GPU-Z. Go to the “Sensors” tab.
  • This window will display various values received from the sensors of your video card. You can find out the percentage load of the graphics chip by looking at the value in the line “GPU Load”.

How to know the manufacturer of GPU memory

There are many coins that actively use memory when mining, so it is very important to check the type of memory before buying video cards for mining.

Everyone knows that Ethhash is a memory intensive algorithm. AMD RX 470 and AMD RX 570, Rx 580 and 590 are known to mine ETH well, compared to them, NVIDIA GTX 1070 also “digs” Ether well. However, the hash rate will not be the same for all GTX 1070, RX 470, 570, 580 and 590 series cards. Performance depends a lot on their type of memory. Here we show you how to determine the memory type of your GPU.

There are several GPU manufacturers: Asus, Gigabyte, Sapphire, EVGA, MSI, Palit, Zotak and others. However, they don’t make memory chips for their graphics cards, instead they buy VRAM chips from vendors who mass produce them.

Some of the most popular GPU memory manufacturers are Samsung, Micron, Elpida and Hynix. It is known that cards with Samsung memory are better than Micron.

To find out the memory type of the GPU, follow the instructions below.

Additional ways to find out what video card is on your computer or laptop using the Windows tools

Besides the already described ways, in Windows 10, 8 and Windows 7 there are additional means of the system allowing to get information on the model and manufacturer of the video card, which may be useful in some cases (for example, if access to the Device Manager is blocked by the administrator).

Viewing information about your graphics card in the DirectX diagnostic tool (dxdiag)

In all modern versions of Windows is installed a particular version of DirectX components, designed to work with graphics and sound in programs and games.

These include the diagnostic tool (dxdiag.exe), which allows you to find out what video card is on your computer or laptop. To use the tool, follow these simple steps:

This tab will show the model of the video card (or more precisely, the graphics chip used on it), driver and video memory information (in my case, for some reason it doesn’t display correctly). Note: This tool also lets you know what version of DirectX you are running. Read more in this article DirectX 12 for Windows 10 (also relevant for other OS versions).

Using the System Information tool

Another Windows tool to get information about your graphics card is System Information. It starts in a similar way: press WinR and type msinfo32.

In the System Information window, go to “Components”. “Display”, where the “Name” field will show which video adapter is used on your system.

Note: msinfo32 does not correctly display your graphics card memory if it is more than 2GB. This is a problem confirmed by Microsoft.

How to view your graphics card in Windows 10

This version of Windows provides several ways to find out what kind of video card you have:

The Device Manager will list all the hardware installed on your computer or laptop. You need to click on “Video Adapters”. You need to click on the triangle next to the name to find out information about them. The model name is displayed there.

To find out the parameters of the video chip, you can use the “System Information” application. To do that you have to enter msinfo32. Then select “Components” and click on “Display”. Maybe it says “Screen”. This will open the most complete parameter list, including information about the video adapter.

The above methods do not always help to find out the video card. In some cases “Device Manager” displays: “VGA-compatible video controller” or “Standard VGA graphics adapter”. Agree that this information is not enough to install a new driver. In these cases you need to use special programs.

How to increase the amount of video memory in Windows 10?

The best way to increase the amount of video memory is to buy a new or better video card. If you use integrated graphics and suffer from poor performance, switching to a dedicated card (even one of the best budget graphics cards) will do wonders for your video output.

Usually the display memory (VRAM) is 128 MB when diagnosing. But you have to consider approx. Total memory when deciding if it can handle games or not.
