How to create and configure a local network between two computers

Sharing files between computers using the LAN

The only thing you must keep in mind is that both systems must be on the same network. You can change the connection environment, but the method works on every connection if you do the following.

The steps required to transfer files between Windows 10 computers over the LAN:

  • Connect both systems.
  • Enable and configure network sharing on both systems.
  • Configure the LAN connection
  • File transfer.

1] Connect both systems

Connect both systems to any LAN network or use a LAN / Ethernet cable to connect them. Make sure that the LAN cables are in good condition. If you prefer to use wireless LAN or wireless LAN, make sure that the connection strength is good.

2] Turn on and set up network sharing on both systems.

Perform this method on both computers, be sure to follow each step.

Press Win R, type control and press enter. The Control Panel will be displayed.

3] Setting up the LAN connection

The local network configuration is not important if you understand how to set up IP addresses. In this method we are not going to set any IP addresses, but we will choose to obtain them automatically. Setting these IP addresses manually requires a basic understanding of how they work.

Press Win R, type control and press enter. The control panel will open.

Change the view to Large Icons and click on Network and Sharing Center.

Now click on “Change adapter settings” in the left pane.

Right-click on the network you’re currently connected to, then select Properties. If the connection is by cable, select Ethernet or if the connection is wireless, select wireless.

Now scroll down and double-click on Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP / IPv4).

On the General tab, select Obtain an IP address automatically. Now select Obtain DNS server address automatically.

Click OK and close the connection properties.

Note. If you work in an organization where networks are set up by any authorized person, you can use his/her.

Now to transfer or share files between computers you can do this quite easily.

Collect all the files you want to share in the folder.

Right click on the folder and select “Share.

Select the user you want to share files to, change the permission level to suit your needs and click “Share”.

Navigate to the system you just shared the folder with. In the system, open this computer and navigate to the network from the left pane to see no. connected network devices.

Select the device from which you have just shared files, and you will see the folder with the files you have shared.

Tip: Using Ethernet cables for this type of sharing is much preferable to wireless networking. Fluctuating Wi-Fi signals can lead to an undetectable device.

Setting up a PC cable connection directly

Usually, once the PC is connected with the cable connection, with Windows 7 installed, all of the devices connected to it become visible. The main computer’s view of other devices will largely depend on the parameters of this connection. If devices are not visible to each other, you need to configure some home network settings (in Windows 7):

Go to the “Start” menu, select “Control Panel”, then “Network and Internet” and “Network and Sharing Center”, then “Change Adapter Settings”.

Right-click on the “Local Area Connection” window and go to “Properties.

Open “Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and click on “Use the following IP address.

The new step is to enter the network settings. If there is a need to connect two PCs, their IP addresses are written in order for convenience (192.168.1.2 и 192.168.1.3). You can use any address up to 192.168.1.254. The default gateway is only entered if you do not want your PCs to find each other. Do the same on the second computer, changing only the IP address.

To receive the Internet signal by other people, apply the main PC section “Local Area Connection”, “Properties” click “Access”, use the section “Allow other users to connect to the Internet this computer.

Availability of data to the users on the network

To access network devices to information on the main PC’s hard drive, you need to group them into one category with a common name. Configuring the router

A home router has 4-6 ports to connect computers and access the Internet. First you need to connect the ISP cable to the router. This slot is usually circled and signed “INTERNET”. Then connect the cable going from the computer to one of the jacks labeled “LAN” and turn on the device.

You open your PC with your browser (you can also use Opera) and type in http://192.168.1.1/ and press “Enter. Depending on the type of router, will appear about the following window:

If the device is new, then write admin and click OK. After that, a dialog box will pop up to enter the router settings. You need to know the settings according to which your ISP gives you access to the Internet:

  • According to the PPPoE protocol by entering the login and password.

  • Dynamic IP. the settings are set automatically.

To establish a connection, log in the same way as when establishing a connection directly. click on “Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” in the sub-item “properties” determine how to get an IP-address (automatic configuration or enter the IP-address for static data).

Wireless Router

Mobile devices and as many computers as you like can be connected to this network (up to 4 devices over the wired connection) and you don’t have to switch network settings. You will always have Internet, and you do not need a second network card, as in the first case. Laptops in such a network are connected via Wi-Fi, and PCs. via cable if they are not equipped with Wi-Fi modems.

  • Give the machines different names and the same workgroup names, as in the first case.
  • Run the ncpa.cpl via search.
  • Open the properties of the active local network connection.
  • Double click on the “IP version 4” line.
  • Set the automatic method of obtaining IP and DNS addresses.

Run “ping 192″ at the command line to test the connection.168.0.1”, where you specify the IP of the second client as the address. If you have any problems check your anti-virus/firewall settings, it may block the connection.

Twisted pair

The cable costs just a few per meter and doesn’t saturate the environment with radio waves, as in the case of Wi-Fi, but this solution requires constant switching between network settings profiles or reconfiguring the network, if the PC connects to the Internet. The computers should be no more apart than the length of the twisted-pair cable, which can cause inconvenience when working on a laptop.

If you do not know how to crimp a network cable yourself, ask the store where you purchased it to do so. Plug the ends of the twisted-pair cable into both devices to make the connection, and you’re done. Now you need to configure the network.

  • Open the System Properties through the Control Panel. System, Security.
  • Change the computer name and the workgroup name: they must be different and the workgroup name must be the same, all in Latin characters. To do this there is a link “Change value”.
  • Open the network connections through the context menu of the network icon in the tray or with the command ncpa.cpl (do it in the search box).
  • Call “Properties” of the current connection (on the local network).
  • Double click on the “IP Version 4” line.
  • At the “IP address” line, enter 192.168.0.1, and on the second computer set 192.168.0.2 (the last digits can be anything from 0 to 255, but different on both machines).
  • Subnet mask. everywhere 255.255.255.0
  • Set the first computer to obtain DNS automatically, and the other computer to “Use the following DNS addresses” and specify as its IP of the first PC.
  • Reboot the machines.
  • Go to “Network Control Center” and click on “Change advanced sharing settings”.
  • Activate network discovery and file sharing on both computers for all profiles (home and public).
  • Disable password protection and save the configuration.

Granting access to files and folders on the computer

To share a Windows folder on the local network, right-click on the folder and select “Properties” and go to the “Access” tab, click on “Advanced Settings.

Check the “Sharing this folder” box and then click “Permissions.

Check the permissions that are required for this folder. If you wish to be read-only, you can leave the default values. Apply the settings you made.

After that, in the folder properties, go to the “Security” tab, click on “Change” and in the next window. “Add”.

Specify the name of the user (group) “Everyone” (without the quotes), add it, and then set the same permissions as you set the previous time. Save your changes.

Just in case, after all these manipulations it makes sense to restart the computer.

Accessing folders on the local network from another computer
