TP-Link set up in the repeater mode

In Wi-Fi access points, the repeater mode is used to extend the Wi-Fi coverage area.

Router appearance

The first thing that catches your eye is not one, not two, but three antennas on the back of the device. That’s what makes it so competitive in the networking market, with wireless speeds of up to 300Mbps.

Router settings

Go to the “Wireless mode”, “Wireless mode” settings menu.

In the network name field, write the name that our wireless network will receive, there are no restrictions in the name, write any you like.

Select the country in the “Region” field, note that for some countries some of the available broadcasting channels are closed.

In the channel menu select “Auto”, so the router will search for the least loaded data channel by itself.

In the menu “Mode” select “11bgn mixed”, so devices that do not support the n-standard (150 Mb/s) can work in the g-standard (54 Mb/s).

Automatic channel width selection will work for most cases.

Check the box to enable wireless broadcasting of the router, and enable broadcasting of the network name (SSID) on the air. Save changes.

Once wireless network is activated, it must be protected from unauthorized access. Go to “Wireless security” menu and choose the encryption method for the network.

Select “WPA-Personal/WPA2-Personal (Recommended)”.

For the correct operation of devices that do not support WPA2, it is recommended to choose “Automatic” in the “Version” field.

In the encryption field, select “AES”. In the password field. “PSK Password”. enter the password to access the wireless network.

The longer is your password, the better. Group key refresh time is recorded in seconds; in the example it is 43200 seconds, t.е. 12 hours. Save the changes.

Configure the LAN IP settings and click “Save.

LAN type. Select Smart IP (DHCP) to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server, or Static IP to configure the IP address manually.

MAC address. The physical address of the LAN ports. The value cannot be changed.

IP address. Enter the IP address in decimal format, separated by dots, if you have chosen a static IP address (the factory default value is. 192.168.0.1).

Subnet mask. Address code defining the network size. Typically 255.255.255.0 is used as the subnet mask.

If you change the IP address, you must use the new IP address to log in.

If you choose Smart IP (DHCP), the DHCP server of the router will not start.

If the newly set IP address is not on the same subnet as the old one, an IP address pool will be configured on the DHCP server.

Select Allow access to stations specified in any enabled entries in the list as a filter rule.

Delete all or disable all entries if they already exist.

1) Enter the MAC address 00: 0A: EB: B0: 00: 0B / 00: 0A: EB: 00: 07: 5F in the MAC Address field.

2) Enter wireless client A / B in the Description field.

3) Select “Enabled” from the Status drop-down list.

4) Click “Save”, then click “Back”.

The configured filtering rules should be listed as shown in the figure below.

Now only client A and client B can access your network.

Click “Refresh” to get the latest status and settings for your router.

Select WISP mode and click Save.

Configure the WAN IP settings and click Save.

If your ISP provides DHCP service, select Dynamic IP and the router will automatically obtain the IP parameters from your ISP.

Click “Refresh” to update the IP settings from your ISP.

Click Release to unblock the IP settings.

MTU (bytes). the normal MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) value for most Ethernet networks is 1500 bytes. It is not recommended to change the default MTU size unless required by your ISP.

Obtain an IP using unicast. The DHCP servers of some ISPs do not support broadcast applications. If you can’t get an IP address the normal way, you can choose this option.(This is rarely required.)

Set DNS server manually. If your ISP provides you with one or two DNS addresses, select “Set DNS server manually” and enter the primary and secondary addresses in the correct fields. Otherwise, DNS servers will be assigned automatically by your ISP.

Host Name. this option specifies the router name.

If your ISP provides a static or fixed IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS settings, select Static IP address.

The IP address. Enter the IP address in dotted-decimal notation provided by your ISP.

Subnet mask. Enter the subnet mask in dotted-decimal notation provided by your ISP. Typically 255.255.255.0 is used as a subnet mask.

Gateway. Enter the IP address of the gateway in dotted-decimal notation provided by your internet service provider.

Primary / Secondary DNS server. (Optional) enter one or two DNS addresses in dotted-decimal notation provided by your ISP.

MTU (bytes). The normal MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) value for most Ethernet networks is 1500 bytes. It is not recommended to change the default MTU size unless required by your ISP.

If your ISP provides a PPPoE connection, select PPPoE.

Enter your PPP username/password. enter the username and password provided by your internet service provider. These fields are case sensitive.

Confirm password. Enter the password provided by your ISP again to make sure that you entered the correct password.

Secondary connection. Only available for PPPoE connection. If your ISP provides an additional type of connection, select “Dynamic IP address” or “Static IP address” to activate the secondary connection.

Always enabled. In this mode your internet connection will be active at all times.

Connection on demand. in this mode the connection to the Internet can be terminated automatically after a specified period of inactivity (Max Idle Time) and be re-established at a second attempt to access the Internet.If you want your Internet connection to be constantly active, enter 0 in the Max Idle Time field. Otherwise, enter the number of minutes to elapse before disconnecting Internet access.

Connect manually. you can click “Connect / Disconnect” to connect / disconnect immediately. This mode also supports the maximum idle time function as a connect-on-demand mode. Internet connection can be disconnected automatically after a certain period of inactivity (Max Idle Time) and will not be able to be re-established when Internet access is attempted again.

How to enable 5GHz on a TP-Link router

In order to enable a Wi-Fi network in the 5 gigahertz range on your router, follow these steps:

  • Go to the router’s settings
  • If you have a green TP-Link interface, select the Working Frequency Selection setting and specify which Wi-Fi bands you want to use: 2 only.4 GHz, 5 GHz only, or both at the same time. Accordingly, in order to fully switch the router to 5 GHz, you must disable the frequency 2.4, leaving only the 5 GHz band.

Resetting the password to enter the TP-Link router settings

If you have forgotten your password to enter the settings of your Tp-Link router, you can reset it to the factory settings and password.

To do this, on the back of the router, press the Reset button for 8-10 seconds.
