In just a couple of days it will be four months since I’ve had my iPhone 11 Pro Max. Exactly what our author Artem Bausov uses a regular iPhone 11.
We thought about it and decided to collect two succinct opinions about the smartphones in one post, plus add some more to them. They are both subjective, but should give a general picture.

iPhone 11 Pro Max has the longest battery life of any iPhone, five hours longer than the iPhone XS Max. It’s rated for 20 hours of offline video playback, 12 hours of streaming video over Wi-Fi and 80 hours of audio playback.

iPhone 11 screen tests
With the theory sorted out, it’s time to move on to the iPhone 11 screen tests and the advanced models of the line. The first test is a test of maximum brightness and contrast. Apple iPhone 11. Lab tests showed that the maximum brightness of the Liquid Retina screen is 644 nits. This is slightly lower than last year’s iPhone XR, which achieved a massive 700 nits.
There is a slight problem with black saturation (predictably, since perfect black with an IPS matrix backlight is unattainable, and we’ve already said that). The brightness of the black background on the iPhone 11 screen is 0.428 nits, although ideally it should be zero. But the ideal is achievable only on the OLED matrix, and here IPS.
The maximum contrast ratio of the matrix is 1505:1. According to this indicator iPhone 11 loses a lot to the top models of the line and is slightly inferior to last year’s iPhone XR. Apple says the maximum brightness is 1,200 nits. It is quite possible, because the test result is obtained with manual brightness settings, that is, with the slider turned to maximum. The iPhone 11 pro’s screen will be even brighter with the automatic settings, but that’s outdoors in bright ambient light, not in the lab. By the way, DisplayMate’s tests showed that iPhone 11’s screen brightness could even be higher than the claimed brightness, but we’ll talk about that in the next section.
If we compare the results with the iPhone XS and XS Max, we see that Apple’s 2019 screens are much brighter. For last year’s models, the maximum brightness was 660 and 653 nits, respectively. Given that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 in automatic mode gives the maximum brightness of 794 nits (that is its ceiling), we can state that the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max is the brightest screen to date.
The maximum contrast ratio in Apple’s newer screens is 2,000,000:1. This is 2 times higher than in last year’s XS or XS Max (1,000,000:1). Such a high contrast ratio by a considerable margin covers the dynamic range required for HDR10 support, so the name Super Retina XDR fits perfectly for the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max displays.
The next mandatory test is color rendering accuracy. To estimate it, we use the coefficient of color deviation, aka DeltaE. The average coefficient shows the color shift within the whole range, and the maximum coefficient is in the part of the range where the shift is the largest. The lower the DeltaE, the better the color reproduction.
In terms of color reproduction the iPhone 11 screen looks better. The average ratio was 1.1, the maximum is raised to only 2.4. The ideal transmission for a smartphone, which is largely due to the peculiarities of the IPS LCD panel.
The IPS LCD does not produce perfect blacks, but it does produce perfect whites, which are very important for color fidelity. Yes, the iPhone 11 screen does not break the record for maximum brightness, but it produces a very correct picture in terms of color.
An important point. usually when you reduce the brightness the color rendering accuracy deteriorates, which is explained by the peculiarities of the backlight. The iPhone 11 display does not have this problem, and the colors remain accurate as much as possible when the brightness is reduced even to 2.3 nits. Thanks to the True Tone feature we already told you about. The iPhone 11 Pro screen is also very good! The average DeltaE ratio is slightly higher, at 1.6, but the maximum rose to only 2.3. This is a great result for an OLED panel, because it is almost impossible to get perfect white on such a matrix. When reducing the light, the colors are not distorted and remain accurate until the brightness is reduced to 1.9 nits.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max screen is larger, and for color accuracy, the size of the display matters. The bigger the screen, the harder it is to achieve ideal results. Accordingly, it should come as no surprise that for the iPhone 11 Pro Max screen, the average deviation factor was 2.4, and the maximum rose to 5.0.
