The Sony WF-1000MX3 is a fully wireless headset, so the charging case deserves special attention. It is quite large, completely plastic and made in not the most practical materials. On the test was the gold version of the headphones, you can not call it a brand, but there is a black modification. And here it is starchy. The lid of the case also quickly loses its marketable appearance. After a week of careful use, it got a grid of scratches, even though the case was stored in an empty
Otherwise, the case is relatively light and graspable. It has no problem opening with one hand, and its lid is spring-loaded. It is easy to get the headphones out, next to the places of attachment have notches, so they are easy to pick up. The design of the case is minimalistic and the only features of the case are the charging indicator and the USB Type-C port. Overall I like the look of the headphones and the case. expensive, stylish and with a Sony feel.
MICROPHONES AND CONVERSATION
Is the microphone suitable for phone calls? Quite! Sure the person you are talking to can tell you are using a headset, but voices are transmitted clearly enough through both earbuds. Also suitable for long business calls, just make sure you are in a quiet place.
It’s also easy to start a conversation in a meeting without removing the earmolds. Sliding your finger over the left earpiece lowers the volume and lets ambient noise through. Plus, the built-in proximity sensors in each earphone detect insertion and removal, so you can play and pause your music accordingly. All you have to do is remove just one of the Sony earmuffs to automatically pause playback.
How to configure the Sony WF-1000XM3 touch control
This is done through the Sony Headphones Connect app. Under “Changing Touch Sensor Function,” you can see how the left and right touch panels are already set up.
Click on the gear and you’ll be taken to a menu where you can switch between different functions and assign them to a specific earpiece. For example, the left sensor can change the volume and the right sensor can change the playback. If you want to assign one of the sensors to call Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, you can do that here, too.
I think having this app is a must if you bought a Sony WF-1000XM3. Why? Most of the cool features can only work with it. The app is released for both iOS and Android, so there will be no problems with installation.
- Recharging the headphones and case. The app shows the charge of the headphones (including individually) and the case. Look in the upper right corner. You can also mute your headphones without packing them in the case.
- Sound control. Wireless Sony WF-1000XM3 smart. They sense what you’re doing. walking, running, standing or eating. And depending on that, adjust the sound, adjust the noise cancellation. You can also check the “Focus on voice” box. It will help you not miss an announcement at the train station.
- Controlling ambient sounds. If you remove the past setting, you can control the noise modulation by setting it to maximum or keeping it in normal mode. In the test, I put the mode switch on the left earpiece sensor and switched as needed. I liked the.
- Equalizer. With it, you can adjust the sound. This is convenient so that you do not need to set the parameters for each source or application separately.
- Now playing. The usual playlist control and sound strength. In practice, I do not use this function.
- Pause when you take it off. The headphones interrupt if you take them out of your ears. Clearly, it’s cool. And I did not notice any deviations in performance.
- Prioritized sound quality. Here you prioritize between sound quality and a stable connection. At home I prefer the former and when outdoors I prefer the latter. With Android, it works consistently in either mode.
- DSEE HX. A feature that makes the sound better in compressed files. Noticed the difference in practice. Although there were some friends of mine that didn’t understand such subtleties and didn’t hear this difference.
- Change the sensor function. Here you select the function that the headphones will perform when the sensor is touched. Two earphones. two functions. Note that there are no swipes.
- Turn the power off automatically. Allows you to set the time after which the headphones turn off if you do nothing with them.
- Unlock the iPhone screen if it is locked.
- Turn the headset on. Press and hold the button for approximately 2 seconds.
- Display devices paired with iPhone. Select [Settings].

Review of TWS headset with active noise cancelling Sony WF-1000XM3
Sony recently introduced its flagship fully wireless headset, which incorporates the most advanced technology from active noise cancellation to software sound enhancement. Accent’s main focus in its design is clearly on usability, but the sound is also quite good. In the end, we face one of the best TWS-headset for everyday use.

Packing and Accessories
The headset comes in a neatly designed cardboard box with high quality printing. Headphones and accessories inside secured with plastic trays and stacked in two layers all very nice and convenient.
The package includes the headphones themselves, a case with charging function, a short USB Type-AType-C cable, six pairs of replacement ear cushions and documentation.
Cushions are available in two versions: three pairs of classic silicone and three more of soft porous material.
Design and construction
The Sony WF-1000XM3 is available in two colors black and platinum-silver. We got the black version for testing.
The body of the headphones is big enough, which is not surprising, considering the amount of various stuffing and battery life. But about all this and a little more detail about the shape of the headphones a little bit below.
On the inside of the headphones are contacts for charging, as well as the windows of the wearing sensors.

Sony WF-1000XM3 Walkthrough
The sound hole is protected by the insert from the sponge material.
The case size is big enough. You can fit it into a trouser. of course. But it is very uncomfortable to wear, and it does not look very neat. The case is made of very pleasant to the touch plastic with a soft-touch coating. On the front is an indicator that shows the current charging level. Next to it is the NFC chip, which serves for quick connection to the source.
The cover is painted gold, which gives the case some originality. Frankly speaking, this solution will hardly please fans of laconic and austere design.
The headphones are held inside by magnets and are safely protected from accidental loss. It’s quite easy and comfortable to get them out, you just need to pick up the headphone by the base and pull it towards you. The cover is also held firmly in the closed position with a magnet, but opens with a nice little effort.
USB Type-C connector for charging is at the bottom of the case.
The first thing to do before connecting is to install the Headphones Connect application, available for iOS and Android. After the first run, we agree with the rules of use, then we get to the page of adding a device, where we are asked to turn on the headset. In the case of the WF-1000XM3 it simply means taking the headphones out of the case they turn on automatically, a pleasant female voice informs about the charge level, after which the device either searches for the last connected device or goes into pairing mode.
The app offers two registration options via Bluetooth and one touch via NFC. We chose the second option, it’s faster and easier. It only remains to place the NFC tag, located in the lid of the case, on top of the receiver in the device.
Confirm the pairing request, just a few seconds goes through the setup process and it’s done.
The next step is for the user to enable one of the most interesting features of the device. adaptive audio control, which we will talk about in detail below. Turn on the proposed function; at this point the connection process is completed and takes less than a minute.
One of the main stumbling blocks when using any TWS-headset is the comfort of the fit in your ear. If the headphones don’t fit well or cause discomfort when you wear them for long periods of time, no amount of technological sophistication will do you any good. Sony WF-1000XM3 have big enough casing and at the first sight cause some doubts about how comfortably and tightly they will sit in your ear.
But when you get to know the description of the headset, it turns out that the shape of the case is designed so that it rests on three points inside the earbud at once. Plus, the rubberized inner surface plays its part, providing extra grip. And, of course, a lot depends on the right choice of ear cushions. fortunately, there are enough of them in the set.
The end result is a very comfortable, secure and snug fit, even during intense cardio workouts. You can wear them for hours at a time without taking them off and they do not squeeze or chafe. Although everyone’s earbuds are different, there are probably people who are not as comfortable.
And while we’re on the subject of sports. The headset is not splash and sweat-proof, which is a shame. But on the other hand, at the time of preparing this test, our prototype has already gone through more than a dozen workouts of varying intensity, including a run in a little rain. No repercussions, everything works fine. But you should not abuse the use of the headset in severe conditions.
The headphones are controlled by the touchpad on the outside of the housing. No questions about the quality of operation, the sensors perfectly registers presses, including slightly wet fingers. A single touch on the left earpad toggles you between modes of noise suppression, a long press activates the function of sound transparency, which we will talk about.
Taps on the right earpiece control playback and calls, as well as calling the voice assistant. There’s no volume control, which is a bit disconcerting. On the other hand, experience suggests that the volume in any case is more convenient to control either at the source, or with another device such as a smart watch.
According to the manufacturer’s statement fully charged headphones can work up to 6 hours of music playback with active noise cancelling, and without it up to 8 hours. In practice this is about right, but at medium volume. If you listen a little louder the run time is reduced by about an hour. But the battery life is still impressive. At the same time the battery power of the case lasts for another three full recharges of the headphones, respectively, we have about 24 hours of work.
But the great thing about the autonomy story is the ability to quickly charge the headphones. Just 10 minutes in the case gives about 90 minutes of playback. I had to bring the headphones to complete discharging on purpose, because in real life they still occasionally find themselves in a case. And it is enough to keep the level of charging, at least, at an average level.
I was pleasantly surprised by the operation of the headset in call mode. You can use one earphone or both at the same time to communicate. Usually even high-quality TWS-headsets provide quality of voice transmission at a level close to the minimum acceptable. That is you can be heard, but all the same from time to time you have to increase your voice and repeat the last phrase to the person you are calling. With WF-1000XM3 you also have to do this, but much less often and in very noisy environments.
The traditional problem with talking in the wind, the TWS headsets have it and the microphone placement can’t help it. If you are walking or jogging fast, or even cycling, you might want to stop to talk because you have a better chance of being heard. In a quiet environment, the test callers praised the voice quality, though they had no trouble catching the moment they switched to and from the phone’s microphone.
Passive noise cancellation of Sony WF-1000XM3 with the ear cushions is on an average level. With ear cushions of porous material you get the tightest possible fit in the ear canal, and therefore maximum isolation from outside noise.
For active noise suppression the brain of the device is responsible for the HD processor QN1e, it also performs 24-bit audio signal processing and functions as a DAC with an amplifier. Ambient noise is picked up by the two microphones on the headphones and fed into the user’s ears in crossover mode. There is no cushion effect on your ears like on the top models. But taking into account the compactness of the case and completely wireless form factor the effectiveness of the combination of good passive and active noise cancellation is still very good.
Street noise is suppressed so well that, for security purposes, they are added to the sound track with a special function, which we will talk about a little later. In cars, the low-frequency engine hum is cut off completely all ANC systems are most effective in the low frequency range. Sharp high-frequency sounds will reach your ears one way or another and there’s nothing you can do about it. Accordingly, the clanking and clattering of the wheels in the subway will still be heard. But smaller and less annoying.
If we compare the comfortable volume level for listening to music with and without noise reduction the difference is up to 20 percent. Some people have an individual intolerance to ANC, which they describe as pressure in the head, this effect appears on any headphones with this technology. If you take out one of the Sony WF-1000XM3 headphones with the noise reduction turned on and leave the other one in your ear you begin to understand what these people are talking about. But then again, that’s the cost of technology, you just have to keep that in mind. In general, the fact of TWS-headset appearance with effective working active noise suppression is already good news.
The app and additional features
Various additional functions, of which Sony WF-1000XM3 has many, can be adjusted from the Headphones Connect app.
The main page of the app is quite long, so in the screenshot above it is divided into three parts. At the top of it you can see the charge level of each earphone and the codec used to transmit the signal. Then there are various settings, some of which we will tell a little more about.
In particular, let’s mention the possibility of reassigning the functions of the touch buttons, which can be very useful. It can pause the music when you take the headset out of your ears and continue to play when you put the earpiece back in. Maximum precision and correctness of the wearing sensors, no misfires and false alarms. They also tell you if you have both headphones on or just one and, if necessary, set the headset to mono-mode.
Sony WF 1000XM3: How to Connect the Sony WF 1000XM3 or WF 1000xm4 to any Device.
By the way, most of the headsets on the market are connected to the source in series: one of the headphones establishes a connection to the source, and the second to the first. The Sony WF-1000XM3 is connected to the phone in parallel, each one separately. This gives an advantage in connection stability and allows you to separately use any of the headphones. Also in the marketing materials Sony makes a special accent on the special design of the antenna, which provides an even more stable connection. And it must be said that during the whole time of testing, the sound in the headset during playback was unexpectedly interrupted only a couple of times in conditions of extremely strong interference.
We are pleased with the presence of a fairly convenient equalizer, which contains five bands, plus a regulator function Clear Bass. It is quite enough to adjust the sound to your taste. You can also find a little guide on how to use the headphones in the app. Really small only a couple of pages. But it is hoped that in future updates its information value will be increased.
But the most interesting thing is, of course, the adaptive sound control feature. It tracks user activity and determines whether the user is walking, running, sitting still or riding in a vehicle. Depending on the situation, the headphone microphones can pick up ambient sound and send it to the speakers if the user’s safety or comfort requires. Two customizable settings: 20 levels of ambient sound volume and gain focus on or off for the appropriate frequency range.
Detection of the type of activity is surprisingly correct, although with some delay it is inevitable, it just takes some getting used to. All in all, it’s nice to have a headset that you can take down the subway and ride a bike in the subway, the noise cancellation will turn on to maximum, and when you ride your bike you will hear the surrounding sounds, which will provide the right level of safety. If you put your finger on the left earpiece, the ambient sound is temporarily turned up to maximum, very convenient when you need to answer a passerby’s question, talk to the cashier in the store, and so on.
In the previous version, the function had an unpleasant feature. if you stop for a while, the system switches to the idle mode almost immediately. That is, you were walking, for example, with comfortable settings for a walk, stopped at a traffic light and while waiting for the green light profile has already managed to switch. Then it takes some time for the system to detect the movement again and return to the desired mode. In general, uncomfortable. The recent September update adds a new feature that allows you to increase the delay before the mode change, for which the developers are grateful. And in general it is good that the application is supported and developed.
The headset supports two codecs, SBC and AAC. The absence of AptX is understandable need to buy an additional license, which will affect the final cost of the device, which is already quite high. And in general for headphones with just good sound AAC is enough for owners of iOS devices and there are no other options. The absence of own Sony codec (LDAC) surprises a little, here we can only suppose, that its absence is connected with compact size of a headset and the necessity to provide its stable and long-lasting work.
The already mentioned QN1e HD processor and 6 mm diameter speakers are responsible for the sound quality. They cope, it must be said, very well the sound at Sony WF-1000XM3 is obviously one of the best among colleagues on TWS-format. They are hardly suitable for enjoying delicate nuances of favourite recordings, but they are quite capable to sound in everyday life and allow listening to music with pleasure and comfort.
The sound is very balanced, the bass is not the brightest, but very clear and does not overshoot the neighboring frequencies. Vocals are perfectly readable, the middle part is generally presented clearly. Sometimes you want more detail in the upper frequencies, but there is no annoying sand and other common problems. At the same time, the headphones respond very well to the equalizer, including the possibility to add a significant bass without distortion. Although the fight for bass is clearly better to start with the use of complete ear cushions of foam material.
Built-in DSEE HX enhancer (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) is very useful for playback from streaming services with poor quality of the stream such as Yandex.Music or Spotify. Many songs start to sound noticeably more impressive and interesting, but don’t expect miracles from it in complex arrangements it behaves unpredictably. And the last couple of words about viewing No problems with image and sound synchronization were noticed, for watching videos on YouTube too.
Find another model with so many additional features, a good battery life, active noise cancellation and a very good sound today is unlikely to succeed so that direct competition to the Sony WF-1000XM3 is practically no. From the world domination, it is separated, perhaps, only quite high But for the money the user receives almost the best headset for today for everyday urban life, which provides maximum comfort of use in a variety of situations.
