The computer doesn’t turn on, no signal

No signal on monitor when computer is turned on

Sometimes users are faced with a situation when after turning on the computer the monitor shows a message “No signal“. There are also possible messages “No input signal” or “No signal detected”, “Check signal cable” or “Check signal cable”. Such messages on the monitor can be caused by different problems with the computer, so without proper experience it is unlikely to find the cause of malfunction quickly.

If you face the same problem we suggest you to read our list of the most probable causes that can lead to this.

Why the computer does not turn on. the first step to finding the cause

Some may say that the following suggestions are unnecessary, but personal experience tells the opposite. If your laptop or computer does not turn on, check the cable connection (not only the plug inserted into the socket, but the connector connected to the system unit), the serviceability of the socket itself and other things that relate to the connection cables (perhaps the cable itself is functional).

Also most power supplies have an additional ON/OFF switch (usually found on the back of the system unit). Check that it is in the “On” position (Important: do not confuse it with the 127-220 volt switch, usually red and not available for simple finger-switching, see. photo below).

If shortly before the problem appeared you had cleaned the computer from dust or installed new equipment and the computer does not turn on “at all”, i.e.е. no fan noise or power indicator lights, check the power supply connection to the connectors on the motherboard, as well as the connection of the system unit front panel connectors (see. How to connect the front panel of the system unit to the motherboard).

Additional possible causes of no signal on the monitor and possible solutions

If none of the above works, let’s move on to other possible solutions which are also quite common:

  • If you have integrated video try physically disconnecting the discrete graphics card and plugging the monitor into the integrated output and see if that solves the problem. If it did, the possible causes are: additional power not connected to discrete graphics card, hardware problems with graphics card, power supply unit lack of capacity (real power may be decreasing due to wear and tear), problems with the slot the graphics card is plugged into.
  • The problem under consideration is often described as “No signal on the monitor, but the computer is working”. Actually the noise of fans and lights after pressing the power button does not always mean that the computer turns on and works: if there are problems with videocard, power supply, RAM, no connection of some power lines to motherboard (often by self-cleaning, assembling and disassembling, replacing components) it might just turn on some lines but not start and also not give any signal to monitor (at that it will not play also OS boot sounds if it had them before but not now). If other monitors do not show on the same computer. this is another argument in favor of this case. Read more about this in a separate manual What to do if the computer does not turn on.
  • If at the beginning of the computer boot the monitor shows something (POST/BIOS screen, logo) and then you get a message that there is no signal, probably something is wrong with the output parameters which are set in the operating system. True, usually in this case it is reported that Signal is out of range. A possible solution if you have Windows is to run safe mode and use the restore points, or boot from a flash drive with the same version of OS you have installed, on the second screen select “System Restore” bottom left and use the restore points. In Windows 10, you can get into the recovery environment after two forced shutdowns (by holding down the power button for a long time, although this is not the safest technique). In the extreme case you can resort to reinstalling the OS.

There is a problem with the pins

So, if you get a message like “The monitor doesn‘t work, no signal“, then first of all you need to look for the solution in the contacts. Since the signal is not coming, it is logical to start with checking the cable:

  • Is the cable really plugged in? Even if you’re sure that the cable is connected and everything must be fine, even if the monitor worked all day long and then suddenly stopped, you need to check the cable. Someone could move the monitor, you could accidentally bump the system unit with your foot, the cable could just come off. So don’t be lazy, especially if it’s a DVI connector.
  • Checking for driver updates. Yes, we leave it exactly in the pin-check section and here’s why. If you just recently updated your video card drivers and then decided to connect the monitor with HDMI or VGA, this cable can be the source of the problem. Some versions of the cable are unidirectional, so they can only work with certain hardware. The simplest example, those video cards where only analog output is supported. An active signal converter may be the solution. And even better. use the original cable from the monitor, refuse adapters.
  • Check if you have another device connected to your computer or laptop: a TV, projector or any other device. Perform the following sequence of actions: completely turn off the computer or laptop, disconnect the connected device, turn on again. Perhaps there was a conflict and the video card stopped supplying a signal to the main monitor.

What to do if there is no signal to the monitor

One of the widespread failures of home computer system is when there is no signal to the monitor from video card. Quite an unpleasant situation: the user switches on the computer as usual, but nothing appears on the screen. it remains dark. If there is no signal to the monitor, then what thoughts come to the person in the first moments!

And one of the main ones is to think about where to get the money for an unplanned purchase of a new display device. And this is a rather large sum of money, so it can be “taken out of the hat”, especially when you want to buy a good model, but not something for a day. Well, it is quite possible that you can do that, too. But you don’t have to hurry: you can always buy a new device. At least because the reasons why there is no signal on the monitor, can be very different. Accordingly, their elimination may require much less money from the family budget. This is what we are going to talk about in our today’s article.

No signal to the monitor? Do not panic!

To determine the cause of the incident, it is necessary to narrow down the “circle of suspects”. The monitor is just a display device which receives information from the computer. The chain of components involved in this process is as follows: application. CPU. motherboard. bus connector. graphics card. cable. monitor. If when you turn on you hear the “beep” of the system speaker signaling the normal state of the other components, then you can immediately exclude the first two.

If there is no signal to the monitor, as cliché as it sounds, you need to make sure that it is receiving power. There were cases when the contact of the power cord was broken. On the back side of the monitor there is a simple connector with two pins, the wire in it is not fixed in any way, but simply plugged in. It is enough to rotate the device wrongly and the contact is broken. It’s also worth checking the status of the power button. The monitor receives the signal from the graphics card through the interface cable (not to be confused with the network cable)!). It is made rather safe, so it is unlikely that there is internal damage to the wires. often the reason there is no signal to the monitor is the broken connection to the monitor and graphic card. Although there are screws on the connector, sometimes they just forget to tighten them. Make sure that everything is normal in these parts. Please note that not just look, but pull the plug out of the connector and plug it back in.

Sometimes the video card is the source of the problem. Alas, this component is not the most reliable in the system unit and sometimes it fails. But before you change anything you need to remove the video card from the motherboard socket and reconnect it, fixing it firmly. Sometimes an unfortunate displacement of the case can cause a break of the hard cord and damage the contact between the card and the board. Many modern processors have an embedded video core. However, its performance is not too high, so even in such systems often use discrete graphics cards. Accordingly, the interface cable is connected to these separate solutions. In the BIOS of the motherboard you must specify the main signal source. If for some reason this setting is lost, the screen will be dark. Lastly, you must press the signal source selection button on the monitor (if more than one input is provided).
